Cat5e
- Commonly used for voice and data, it includes four twisted pairs terminated
in a single RJ-45 cable connector.
Cat5e is the enhanced version of Cat 5. The
main difference is Cat5e consist of tighter twisted pairs. Cat 5e is suitable
for 100BASE-T and 1000BASE-T (Gigabit) networks. Cat5e provides performance of
100 MHz, but is limited to 300ft distance for a single drop. Cat6
- Consist of four twisted copper wire pairs terminated in a single RJ-45 cable
connector. Cat6 is compatible with Cat5 and Cat5e and is suitable for 100BASE-T
1000BASE-T, and future 10000BASE-T (10Gigabit) networks. Cat6 provides
performance of 250MHz and is also limited to 300ft distance for a single drop. Fiber
- A glass fiber designed to transfer light along its length by confining as
much light as possible. Fiber is often the best solution for drop lengths
exceeding 600ft. Fiber optics permits transmission over longer distances at
higher data bandwidth rates than any other forms of wired and wireless
communications. Fiber Cable consists of a glass fiber core surrounded by a
fiber coating and over coating, then a strength member and finally an
insulating outer jacket. Specific fiber connectors ST, SC, and FC require polishing. Single
Mode Fiber - Fiber designed to carry only a single wave of light. Unlike multi-mode
optical fibers, single mode fibers do not exhibit dispersion resulting from
multiple spatial modes. Single mode fibers are also better at retaining the
fidelity of each light pulse over long distances than are multi-mode fibers. Multi
Mode Fiber - Type of optical fiber mostly used for communication over shorter
distances, such as within a building. It can carry 1 Gbit/s for typical
building distances. Typical transmission speeds/distances limits are 100 Mbit/s
up to 2 km (100BASE-FX), 1 Gbit/s for distances up to 1500-1800ft (1000BASE-LX ). Coaxial
- Electrical cable consisting of a round conducting wire, surrounded by an insulating
spacer, then a conducting sheath, and a final insulating jacket. It is used to
carry a high-frequency audio, video, or broadband signal.
